(Honesdale, January 29, 2022)…The Honesdale High School Interact Club is going above and beyond to support the fight against Polio disease with the Purple Pinkie Project.

The Purple Pinkie Project is a campaign that collects money towards efforts to eradicate polio from the globe. Polio is a crippling infectious disease that attacks the brain and spinal cord, causing paralysis. Children under the age of 5 are at the greatest risk of contracting this disease.

Doctors started dyeing the pinkies of vaccinated kids purple. In villages and towns around the world, this was the clear indication of who had been vaccinated and who had not yet received the vaccine.

The Purple Pinky Project is a great way we can show our support to all around the world. All students will have the opportunity to pay to get their pinky's dyed purple throughout lunch times on February 8, 9 and 10th. Also
Interact members will be at the JV and Varsity Girls’ Basketball game on Friday, February 11t as well as at the Boys’ Basketball game on Monday, February 14th.

The community also gets a chance to join in:
“The Purple Pinkie Project” rolls out February 8th and will run for two weeks. “In other countries when the polio vaccine is distributed, children line up to receive their vaccine,” said Brian Fulp, the club’s Rotarian coordinator, “Once they have gotten their vaccine, they will get a piece of fruit or a toy.  To make sure the students only come through the line once, the Rotarians dye their pinkies purple.   This also helps identify who has not received the vaccine.”
“The students will also be visiting businesses throughout Honesdale to collect $1 and a photo for their social media page,” said Bennet Fritz, Interactor, “We want to bring awareness to Polio Eradication to the community and we think meeting face to face and creating a social media buzz in town is  a great way to go.”

We hope to see you and your purple pinky very soon!  Thank you for the support of this important initiative.
